The end of an era: Columba Gill retires
The latter half of 2022 saw the end of an era for Donegal News editor, Columba Gill. After 25 impressive years of service at the helm, Columba put down his pen and headed for pastures new.
Anticipation filled Donegal; who will be the next editor?
The woman for the role was our very own Laura McMonagle. A native of County Kildare, Laura joined the Donegal News in 2017 as a reporter and was News Editor since 2021.
The first woman to hold the position of editor in the 120-year history of the paper, Laura is already setting records and reaching new heights. A graduate of Dublin City University where she completed a masters in Journalism, Laura is committed to providing first-class journalism across all platforms, from print to online. Laura understands the importance of community and is dedicated to telling the stories of the people of Donegal and raising the issues that are important to them.
Replacing Columba who served as editor for an impressive 25 years, is no easy task, but Laura is up for the challenge. She recognises the significance of the role and the responsibility that comes with it, and is determined to maintain the high standards set by her predecessor, while also bringing new ideas and approaches to the table.
Laura said it is a privilege to take on the role of editor of a title with such a long and proud history rooted in the community. “I know I have big shoes to fill replacing Columba Gill who has given decades of service to the paper and I wish him well in his retirement. This is a paper with a long and proud history telling the stories of the people of Donegal and raising the issues that are important to them.
“As well as having a long past, the Donegal News also has a bright future. The news industry has changed in many ways in recent years but what hasn’t changed is our commitment to the community and to providing first class journalism across our papers and online.”
We are delighted to make the announcement that Laura McMonagle will be Columba’s successor. The Donegal News has seen many changes over the past century and as we prepare to see many more in the future, we have every confidence in Laura to steer the title forward and maintain it as the best in the county.
